Living the ranching dream that formed from a partnership cow in 1959, A Bar Ranches have evolved. Owned by Mike and Martha Armitage both from cattle and ranching families, the ranch maintains a cow herd of over 4,000 head and breed their replacements of over 500 heifers each year.

A Bar Ranch began their genetics with crossing Herefords cattle with Brahman cattle. This gave them the F1 cross we know today as ‘tiger stripe’ cattle. Since then A Bar Ranch has been breeding high quality angus bulls to those replacement females, creating a cow that fits all the ranch’s marketing and environmental needs.

The ranch is split into two calving seasons but more heavily focused on the spring herd for numbers. Each year the steers are marketed through auctions and/or private treaty sales. The heifers are held for development where they are grown, bred, and sold as bred females. The ranch is consistently replacing females, allowing the ranch to have a strict selection criteria.

These heifers are offered for sale at any of their three auctions: At the Ranch Spring Sale, At the Ranch Fall Sale and the Fall Gatherin’ held in El Reno, Oklahoma. They are sold through their livestock marketing agency, Armitage Livestock. Customers can find a sort of frame size, 30-day calving period, or breed of heifer that fits their needs. The ranch heavily evaluates each female, making sure they are quality, commercial replacements.
